The Earth, Her Water and Her Air.

Based on the work of Dr Adam Nieman, this concept comes from an illustration of his that won the Visions of Science photo competition in the Telegraph newspaper in 2004.

This a model built within Second Life that shows the Earth (diameter 12,756 km) with the next largest sphere being all the Earth’s atmosphere rolled up into a ball (diameter 1999 km and 5140 trillion tons) and the smaller sphere is all the Earth’s water, sloshed up into a ball (diameter 1390 km and 1,4087 billion cubic kilometres). Despite the numbers, visually there’s a lot less than you might think.

And the really tiny sphere (diameter 62km), which you can only see in the close up? That’s all the Earth’s fresh (drinkable) water. Small isn’t it – so you’d better not waste any!
